What Techniques Can I Use to Find and Purify Water in a Desert Environment?

Surviving in a desert environment can be challenging especially when it comes to finding and purifying water. With limited water sources available it is important to know techniques that can help you locate and make use of any water that may be present. Here are some techniques that you can use to find and purify water in a desert environment –

 

 

Finding Water

1. Look for Vegetation –

In the desert vegetation such as cacti and other plants often grow near water sources. By locating these plants you may be able to find water nearby.

2. Follow Animal Tracks –

Animals in the desert need water to survive just like humans do. By following animal tracks you may be led to a water source that the animals are using.

3. Look for Greenery –

In a desert environment patches of greenery may indicate the presence of water. Look for areas with more plants and trees as these can indicate a nearby water source.

4. Search for Low lying Areas –

Water naturally flows to low lying areas so be sure to check valleys depressions and canyons for signs of water. Digging in these areas may uncover underground water sources.

5. Watch for Condensation –

In the early morning you may find dew on the ground or plants. Collecting this dew or using a cloth to soak it up can provide you with some water.

Purifying Water

1. Boiling –

One of the simplest and most effective ways to purify water is by boiling it. Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute to kill any harmful bacteria or parasites.

2. Solar Distillation –

You can create a makeshift solar still by digging a hole in the ground and placing a container in the center. Place a piece of plastic over the hole securing the edges with rocks. As the sun heats the hole the water evaporates and condenses on the plastic dripping into the container.

3. Filtration –

Using a cloth or bandana you can filter out large particles from the water. For smaller particles and impurities you can use a water filter or purifying tablets.

4. Chemical Purification –

Add a few drops of iodine or chlorine to your water and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before drinking. These chemicals will kill any harmful bacteria in the water.

5. Charcoal Filtration –

You can create a makeshift charcoal filter by layering sand gravel and charcoal in a container. Pour water through the layers and the charcoal will help to remove impurities and odors from the water.
